the rarest akebia with the largest fruit. this akebia longiracemosa is the highland form, the leaves are narrower than the normal type. it is found in high altitude about 1500 -2000 m in taiwan.
growing like wisteria, this woody climber produces long pendulous deep purple flowers in spring. each raceme has both male and female flowers. most akebia requires cross pollination to set fruits dand this can be achieved by crossing over two different species or two seed grown plant within the same species. akebia longiracemosa has the most male flowers so it is the universal pollen donor. the fruit of this species is also the largest and most delicious among any chocolate vines. the pulp is fragrant and tasted like custard apple.
great plant for groundcover or grown on fences, trellis or pergolas.
it can also be made into bonsai just like wisteria.
