the japanese apricot or prunus mume has been used as traditional food in china and japan for thousands of years. in japan the pickled fruit is known as umeboshi. it is a small deciduous tree native to china. in winter time masses of white flowers appear and always cover the whole plant. the flower is extremely frangrant which is quite rare in the stone fruit family. when the trees are bloom the scent can be carried by breezes and can reach as far as 10 meters. the blooming plant looks like a miniture japanese flowering cherry. this plant is more popular for home gardens than flowering cherry in both japan and china due to its smaller size and less vigorous root systems. prunus mume is usually a very heavy croping plant. a mature plant can bear thousands of fruits each year. fruits are picked just before it turns yellow. fruits are not eaten fresh, but can be pickled with sugar or salt, made into plum wine. this plant is also an excellent species for bonsai. there are several bonsai plants in japan live up to several hundred years and are still thriving today. a very easy plant to grow, needs no much care. can adapt wide range of climate. very frost hardy to -15c. this is probably the only ornamental prunus that can flower normally in subtropical climate. its winter flowering habit makes it very popular for lighting the garden in the poorest time of the year.
